Welcome to Sandwich Season
Adventures in middle age, sandwiched between aging parents and growing children ... and other duties as assigned
I’m glad you’re here! I started Sandwich Season to share my experiences of this time of life and to offer a sense of camaraderie, some strategies and hope.
Every season passes, but I’m learning they are best lived in the company of others embracing—and sometimes struggling—on similar journeys.
Why Sandwich Season?
It's the material I've been living. Here’s my CliffsNotes of the past year:
Supporting my parents as they aged in place
Organizing my parents’ move into a retirement community
Finding homes for generations’ worth of family treasures
Preparing to sell the family home
Helping my dad care for my mom as dementia and other health problems emerged
Working with Hospice
Experiencing healing in my relationship with Mom before she passed away
Supporting Dad through a stroke that hit less than two months after Mom died
I'm happy to report that my dad has agreed to provide commentary!
In the younger generation, our son is in his senior year of high school, and we're working with him to figure out the future.
The Sandwich community
I know many of us are living in the middle, and I’d like Sandwich Season to be a place of encouragement and problem-solving.
Truth is, I’m building this plane while flying it … not to mention living a lot of life at the same time … so it will evolve gradually.
What to expect
Sandwich Season will arrive in your inbox or in your Substack app on Thursday mornings (Minnesota time).
Thank you for joining me today!
Sarah
P.S. Here’s a little bit about me.
P.P.S. Loon Landing readers, this is a whole different newsletter, and I invite you to give it a try. It is a shift from what you originally signed up for, and I understand if you need to unsubscribe.
